My name is Rajinder Kaur.

I’ve been learning and teaching with Professor Surinder Singh (Yogi of Sound) and have been with Raj Academy since 2008, including running Gurmat Kirtan camps, Kirtan darbars, Waheguru Simran events (Dukh Bhanjan meditation healing in prescribed Raags), teaching in various locations across the UK. I teach Gurbani Kirtan in Raag using all the Tanti Saaj instruments including the, Dilruba, Saranda, Rabab, Sarangi and Taus.

My journey with Kirtan began in childhood. As I grew older, my passion for music led me to pursue a Master’s Degree in Indian Classical Music.

During this time, I had the opportunity to meet Professor Surinder Singh, whose insights into the Sikh Saaj—the instruments created by the Gurus—deeply resonated with me. This encounter ignited a profound connection to the spiritual and musical heritage of Gurbani Kirtan.

To further deepen my understanding, I pursued a Bachelor of Music (BMus) degree at the University of West London under the guidance of Professor Surinder Singh (Yogi of Sound). Through this academic journey, I learned to perform Kirtan in the prescribed Raags of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. This education not only enriched my knowledge of musicology and Raag terminology but also deepened my appreciation for the spiritual essence of Kirtan.

I discovered the powerful role that Raag’s mood plays in connecting with Shabads on a more profound level. I also realized how the unique emotional tones of each Raag can positively impact mental well-being, offering comfort, calmness, and inner peace. This newfound understanding bridged a vital gap in my musical and spiritual journey, allowing me to experience Kirtan with renewed depth and meaning.

My ongoing journey continues to be one of learning, reflection, and connection through the beautiful tradition of Sikh music.

Since then, my life’s ambition has been to share this knowledge with others. I have been improving my own knowledge while sharing with my students.

Kirtan is not just playing a few notes and singing on it. Kirtan goes much deeper. This is the inner journey that is available when you understand your emotions and create a deeper connection with yourself. Learning how to use Gurbani in its intended way. How to heal yourself. Heal your soul.

Through this lifelong journey, I have come to realize that Kirtan is not just music—it is a path to inner peace, self-discovery, and spiritual growth. By sharing this gift with others, I hope to inspire them to embark on their own transformative journeys and experience the profound healing power of Gurbani Kirtan.
